Why Coco Left the Garden Gate Open
A napkin lands on Coco's head during preparations for a perfect picnic. With Mimi's help, more than the garden gate gets a little adjustment.

Scene 01
One, Two, All Ready!
Heart Garden was a place the friends cared for together, watering plants and sweeping paths. Coco noticed even the smallest leaf. A crooked flowerpot or a loose knot never went unnoticed.
After tending the flowers today, Coco and Mimi were having a picnic. Coco set out two cups and two apple slices, then checked the space between the chairs. “One, two, all ready!”
Last came a round stone beneath the gate. Mimi could walk in easily, even with both arms full. Coco nodded at the tidy table.
Scene 02
An Uninvited Runner
But the first guest was the wind. It puffed up the tablecloth and sent a napkin racing across the grass. One petal dropped straight into a cup.
“Napkin! The picnic is over here!” Coco chased after it. No sooner was it back in place than another napkin took flight.
Coco's long ears swung with all the rushing. The carefully planned order was slipping away. It was nearly time to see the flowers! Coco looked at the gate. Blocking the wind's entrance seemed certain to fix everything.
Scene 03
Coco's Napkin Hat
Just as Coco reached to remove the stone, a napkin swooped down onto the green hood. Coco stopped, unable to see properly.
A little laugh came from outside. “New hat?” Mimi stood at the gate holding a flowerpot. “Um… the wind chose it.” Coco lifted off the napkin.
While watching the wind, Coco had missed the guest's arrival. If the gate had shut, Mimi would have needed to manage the latch as well as the pot. Coco put the stone back and stepped aside.
Scene 04
What Needed a Rest First
“Now let's go and see the flowers!” Coco said. Mimi shifted the pot. “My arms would like a rest before this flower does. I had to put it down several times on the way.”
Mimi's long ears were lower than before. Coco noticed the dirt beneath the pot and Mimi's slow steps. It was not the picnic that Mimi disliked. A place to rest needed to come first.
Coco looked at the picnic plan. The cups and apple slices had all been counted. How a friend might feel on arriving had not.
Scene 05
A Place Not Yet Counted
Coco cleared a low stand in the shade. Mimi set down the pot, and both arms felt lighter. A comfortable chair went beside it.
“I can rest and look at the flowers from here,” Mimi said. Coco brought the table closer. This time, the important thing was whether Mimi could reach a cup, not whether the chairs were evenly spaced.
The wind lifted another napkin. Coco started to run, then stopped. “Could we soften the breeze without shutting the gate?” Mimi stood up to look at the gate together.
Scene 06
The Gate-Gap Experiment
Mimi held the gate while Coco moved the stone. With the gate wide open, the napkins flapped. Almost closed, the gap was too narrow for someone carrying a flowerpot.
“A little wider.” “How about this much?” Coco watched the edge of a napkin carefully. With the stone farther in, the gate stopped halfway open.
Mimi walked through and back with empty hands. “Pass!” Coco checked the napkins. “And this one's staying put!” A gentle ribbon of breeze slipped through the gap they had found together.
Scene 07
Folding Up the Plan
Mimi left the flower walk for later. Coco folded the picnic plan into a pocket. There was no need to finish everything in its written order today.
In the shade, Coco offered a cup. The petal from earlier was still floating inside. “A guest who arrived before us,” Mimi said.
Coco brought over one more chair. No one else was expected just then. It could hold a pot for a while, or a friend who wanted somewhere to rest.
Scene 08
One, Two, One Empty Place
They drank at the round table. Mimi's flower stood at the edge of the shade. Through the half-open gate, the path home was still in view.
“One, two…” Coco counted the chairs. “One empty place!” Mimi pointed at the floating petal. “No chair for that guest?”
“That guest is already having a bath.” Coco laughed. The breeze lifted a corner of a napkin, but this time Coco did not chase it. Coco put down the cup and listened to Mimi's next story.
