Mimi's Hush Garden
Bells, greetings, and a rattling cart arrive all at once. After Mimi's “Hush!” stops Coco short, the friends try a little sound experiment.

Original fiction · Ages 7–10 · Read together with a guardian

Scene 01
A Morning Found by Long Ears
Heart Garden was full of small morning sounds. A drop tapped down from a leaf. Someone brushed a path with a soft swish. Mimi lifted those long ears and listened to each sound in turn.
Mimi liked the stone bench beside the flowers. After watering, it was possible to hear water soaking into the soil. Sometimes Mimi wanted to sit without talking, with only ears at work.
There were three small bells in the flower garden too. In a light breeze, they rang once, paused, then rang again. That was one of Mimi's favorite morning sounds.
Scene 02
All at Once!
That day, Coco spotted new flowers and grew excited. “Mimi! Look here! Three flowers!” Just then, a gust made all three bells ring together.
A cart rattled beyond the fence as well. Ring-ring, Coco's greeting, clatter-clatter! It felt as if every sound were trying to squeeze through one tiny door.
There was no room to choose a single sound. Mimi's shoulders rose, and the words grew short. “Hush!” Coco stopped. But the bells rang again, as though they had not heard.

Scene 03
Bells Tucked into Cloth
“You hush too!” Mimi wrapped the bells on a low branch in soft cloth. One, two, three. The last bell gave a very small ring.
Coco stepped back to the end of the path. Coco had only wanted to share the flowers, but now it seemed Mimi did not want a visit. Coco waited, turning a fallen petal between two paws.
Mimi needed a little time alone. On the bench, Mimi's shoulders settled. Another breeze came, but this time the bells stayed quiet inside their cloth.
Scene 04
A Tummy That Didn't Know Hush
In the quiet, Mimi let out a long breath. Then a rumble came from very close by. Mimi looked down at their tummy.
“You haven't learned hush, have you?” The tummy rumbled again. Mimi ate a slice of apple saved for later.
Strange. The drip of water was welcome now, and the tummy's rumble was all right too. Not every sound needed to disappear. Earlier, the loud ones had arrived too close together, all at once.
Scene 05
The Words After Hush
Mimi walked to Coco at the end of the path. Coco asked carefully, “I thought you didn't want me to come.”
“That wasn't what I meant,” Mimi said. “So many loud sounds together felt like too much. Today I'd like to rest quietly inside the flower garden. Could you say a small hello by the gate?”
Coco looked from the empty bench to the bells. Now there was something clear to change. “Let's move a bell to the gate too. You can sit and listen while I move it a little at a time.”

Scene 06
Ring, Pause, Listen
They hung just one bell by the gate and put the other two in a basket. Mimi sat on the stone bench. Coco gave the bell a gentle ring. Still a little loud.
“One step farther away,” Mimi said. Coco moved the bell and added one layer of cloth. Another ring. This time, both friends waited until the sound had finished.
“Like this?” Coco whispered. Mimi listened. “Yes. I can hear it, but it isn't crowding me.” Coco smiled. “So we don't have to wrap my voice in cloth too?”
Scene 07
Different Places
They made the gate a place for a small greeting and the inner bench a place to rest quietly. Coco set a low chair a little way from the bench.
“I don't have to answer every time here?” Coco asked. “That's right. You don't have to smile either,” Mimi said. Wanting quiet today did not have to change.
Coco fetched a basket for dry leaves. Dragging it would make a clatter, so Coco set it down gently. Mimi noticed that small movement and leaned back comfortably on the bench.

Scene 08
A Garden Heard Softly
Mimi rested beside the flowers while Coco gathered leaves one at a time. A bell sounded by the gate. One ring, then quiet. Mimi closed their eyes and listened to the end.
Much later, Mimi spoke first. “There's one more new flower.” This time, Coco did not shout. Coco pointed to the bloom and gave a small nod.
“If tomorrow's wind is stronger, we can move things again,” Mimi said. Coco lifted the basket. “The bell's place, and ours!” They spent the afternoon where they felt comfortable now.
