Coco and Mimi watch the resting fish and the gray current reaching farther toward the rocky island

Scene 01

The Current Has Moved

The next morning, Coco, Mimi, and Lulu sailed toward the quiet cove. Their little boat stopped outside its entrance.

The fish moved slowly in the shallows. But the end of the gray current had crept closer to the rocky island than it had yesterday.

Scene 02

How Far Did It Reach?

Coco looked from the round rock marked on yesterday’s map to the end of the current today. The gray water had passed one more rock and come closer.

“We know the current reached farther. We don’t know why it widened yet,” said Lulu. Coco drew only the place they could see today.

Mimi and Lulu watch from a safe distance as the fish turn away from the gray current and swim back toward the cove

Scene 03

The Fish Turn Back

One fish swam near the edge of the gray water. A moment later, it turned toward the shallows, and the other fish followed.

Mimi heard a little splash. “We saw them turn back. We don’t know what they’re thinking, so let’s keep our distance and watch.”

Scene 04

What We Saw, What We Don’t Know

The Haru Pets marked the cove with a star and drew wavy lines for the current’s edge yesterday and today. They added a small arrow where the fish turned.

“Let’s leave blank anything we aren’t sure about,” said Coco. The friends made two lists: what they saw and what they still didn’t know.

Scene 05

Telling the Sea Keepers

Lulu used the radio on their boat to call the sea keepers. “The gray current is wider than yesterday. We also saw the fish turn back before they reached its edge.”

The sea keepers answered, “Let’s meet at a safe place.” The friends stayed outside the cove and did not sail toward the gray water.

Coco and Lulu study a text-free map and radio; a dotted route avoids the gray current and leads to a distant safe sea with rest coves

Scene 06

A Farther Place to Rest

The sea keepers looked at the map with them over the radio. They told the friends about a protected sea farther away, with quiet coves where everyone could rest along the way.

“We’ll check the route first. Let’s not hurry the fish. If the school stops, we stop too.” Mimi felt calmer when she heard the keeper’s plan.

Scene 07

Drawing a Safe Route

Coco and Lulu drew a dotted line from the cove to the protected sea. It went around the gray current, with stars at two places where the fish could rest.

Mimi watched to make sure the fish could still swim in and out of the cove. “Even if we plan a route, the fish should choose where to go.”

At sunset, Coco and Lulu look over a map of the route around the gray current while the fish rest in the open cove

Scene 08

A Plan for Tomorrow

As the sun began to set, the fish were still resting in the shallows. The Haru Pets left the cove entrance open and agreed to check the route with the sea keepers tomorrow.

Their map now showed a path to the protected sea. The gray current had spread a little farther, but the friends knew who to tell and how to look for a safe way together.
